How To Create Perfect Bonsai Trees

The secret to creating a perfect bonsai tree is learning how to shape it correctly. 'Shaping' a bonsai tree refers to controlling the shape of it with the use of tools, rather than letting it grow willy-nilly.

The most well-known examples of non-bonsai shaping are the hedge sculptures created by Edward Scissorhands in the movie of the same name.

However, we are obviously operating on a much smaller scale when shaping bonsai trees.

Tools For Growing Bonsai Trees

Concave Pruning Shears

One of the most common tools we will be using are "concave pruning shears", otherwise known as “concave cutters”. These cutters look nothing like the enormous scissors used by Johnny Depp in Scissorhands. Concave cutters are excellent for bonsai work because they let you prune your bonsai tree without cutting anything you didn’t meant to cut. In short, concave cutters let you trim your tree without nicking the bark.

Aluminum Wire

Another important tool you will make good use of when shaping your bonsai is aluminum wire. Anodised copper wire is also used. The wire is used to control the direction of growth of the trunk and branches of the bonsai tree. Specially-available bonsai wire is wrapped around the branches of the tree, causing it to grow in a desired direction.

Weights

You can also use bonsai wire in conjunction with weights, which cause the branches to droop – making the tree appear much older than it really is.

How To Water Your Bonsai Tree

The nature of bonsai (forcing a plant to remain smaller than its natural capabilities allow) means that watering your bonsai tree can be quite tricky. This is because the roots of the bonsai tree are unable to grow to their fullest in a small tray or pot. The stunted roots are less able to gather water from the surrounding soil, making it easy for the bonsai tree to become dehydrated. The bonsai requires a lot more attention with regards to water levels than do other trees.

The Dormancy Period

The dormancy period for bonsais refers to that period when the trees do not grow leaves or roots. Dormancy periods take effect each year for most bonsais. It is important not to shape or prune the tree during the dormancy period as it can stunt the growth of your tree or even kill it.

Getting Started With Bonsai Trees

You can get a starter kit for growing bonsai trees quite cheaply. I usually get my bonsai tree supplies online as the online stores are cheaper than the brick-and-mortar equivalents.

Growing bonsais is a lot of fun. The sight of dwarf trees in your backyard will be a definite conversation starter for your next barbecue or gathering. Bonsai tree growing is a rewarding hobby that is growing in popularity in most countries.
