Extra Low Profile Ceiling Fans
Extra low profile ceiling fans can make your home look amazing - for pennies on the dollar.
It's easy to lose our cool on hot days. With the mercury rising, little arguments can break out over nothing, and the most trivial things can seem terribly important. Everyone knows that a ceiling fan or an airconditioner makes you feel better on this sort of day.
However, I once lived in an apartment that had a ceiling that was too low for a ceiling-mounted fan. There was no airconditioner installed and I was going mad every summer.
Then one day, I heard about extra low profile ceiling fans. These types of fans are simply normal ceiling fans, but with one crucial difference. The downrod (the rod most normal ceiling fans hang off) is removed or shortened (by the manufacturer) to allow for greater head clearance. This means that the blades of these fans spin quite close to the ceiling, giving you as much as much as two feet of extra head clearance. Needless to say, I installed an extra low profile ceiling fan the very next day.
Extra Low Profile Ceiling Fans With Built In Light Fixtures
For those who are about to build a new home, you can install these low profile fans with light fixtures built in. In one foul swoop, you can have both a ceiling fan and a downlight in your new room. If you're building (or remodeling) a home in a modern style, I particularly like the Cirrus / Hugger low profile ceiling fan in brushed aluminum. It comes with an optional light and looks absolutely beautiful.
Some Excellent Low Profile Ceiling Fans
As well as the Cirrus/Hugger mentioned above, I also like the single blade ceiling fan made by Fanimation for the modern home. It's called the Enigma. The Enigma is a divine looking fan with uplights and a downlight. It comes in satin nickel or black (though I strongly recommend the satin nickel variety). A six inch (15 cm) downrod is included, although longer downrods are available for purchase.
If you're decorating in an art-deco style, I like the Ernest Hemingway Ceiling Mount, also made by Fanimation. I don't work for Fanimation but they do make some beautiful fans! The Ernest Hemingway also comes with a six inch downrod for maximum head clearance (so you can hold your mojito without fear).
If you're remodeling childrens' rooms, you might also like some of the kids' fans. You can get the Ballerina ceiling fan or the Baseball ceiling fan (pun not intended), both made by Westinghouse. Although head clearance is not an issue for children, it is for their parents who come into their rooms!
