Well, well, how things change. Now the top nightclubs and bars in New York, Sydney and London use wallpaper-inspired prints on their lampshades. The trendiest nightclubs even use wallpaper on the walls itself – shock horror! Or is wallpaper truly making a comeback in decorating fashion?

Well, I say old wallpaper will never make a comeback. You just can't excuse bad taste. But what I like to call 'new wallpaper' is definitely making a comeback. New wallpaper is not what you might have seen at your grandparent's house. New wallpaper has designer patterns, in funky or muted color schemes.

For example, funky geometric squares, tasteful stripes or retro circle patterns are all in. These designs are different from their counterparts of yesteryear in that they are well designed and in very good taste. Designers know that if anyone is going to hang wallpaper these days, it has to be tasteful. 50 years ago, wallpaper was the norm and so there were a lot of ugly designs out there (Hello Grandma)!

In terms of designs available, I recommend choosing from what are called the 'designer ranges' or 'designer lines' of the wallpaper manufacturers. I do not recommend the childrens' wallpaper, kitchen wallpaper or bathroom wallpaper. It is all too easy to get these sorts of wallpapers horribly, horribly wrong. If you stick to the designer ranges (please choose a color scheme that matches your home décor) you'll be okay.

I am not a big fan of hanging wallpaper as this is also all too easy to get wrong. A single bubble or misaligned panel can make the downside of wallpaper glaringly obvious. If you wouldn't install kitchen tiles by yourself, I wouldn't recommend hanging wallpaper by yourself either. There are lots of better ways I could spend a Sunday afternoon!
